Please Oppose S-87

Please Oppose S-87
The Issue
Help us stop RI Senators from making a wrong turn in RI's path to offering a high-quality public school option to RI children.
On Wednesday, June 17th, The Senate Education Committee is scheduled to vote on S-87, a bill that would impose a moratorium on future charter school growth by requiring local town councils and school committees to approve applications. As written, the bill also calls for a STOP to local funding for new children whose parents choose to enroll them in a public charter school beyond fiscal year 2015.
Just this year, 13,579 public charter school applications were submitted for a mere 1,871 seats. This is an indication that there is a strong demand for public school choice and that members of the Senate should not support any bill that would take away RI families’ access to a high-quality public school choice. Furthermore, stopping local funding from following children who attend a public charter school will leave families scrambling for an educational choice that meets their needs and expectations.
