Be Transparent with NC State Students about Tuition and Fee Breakdowns
The Issue
As students we are familiar with making sacrifices for the cost of education: whether it’s working full time while going to school, strapping ourselves to thousands in student debt, or even our parents taking the hit to aid us to higher education. A degree from NCSU is already unaffordable but the tuition and fees are steadily increasing.
And we want to know why. Paying such a high price can make students bitter especially when a majority of students are unaware of what their money actually supports.
We want greater transparency from our university. What percent of our tuition and fees is going to administration costs? What is going to athletics? What is going to new facilities or special projects?
Currently NCSU releases a budget, but it is detached from students and vague (https://dashboard.ofa.ncsu.edu/f_a_index.php). Creating a page with more specific breakdowns of what their tuition and fees support could foster an environment where students feel connected to and invested in the growth of their university, instead of feeling like they are being exploited for every penny or blindly paying into a system.
Along with a simpler, specific webpage, increased outreach to students informing them of the budget and being more open and proactive with tuition and fee changes would make students a greater part of the conversation surrounding ideas for growth of NCSU, as well as increasing respect for the University’s honesty.
Sign the Petition to tell Mary Peloquin-Dodd, the current Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administration for NCSU that more transparency is not only a sign of respect to students, but beneficial for the unity and morale of the Wolfpack all together.
