Marvel, Please Keep Steve Rogers Alive in the MCU!!
The Issue
To be clear, I don't *know* that Steve Rogers will be killed off in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but various interviews and articles I have read of late do not have me hopeful. One way or another, it sounds like Steve's arc will come to a close. Given Sebastian Stan's contract length and the fact that his character, Bucky Barnes, became Captain America in the comics for a while, it seems likely that the shield will get passed to Bucky. And I'm not exactly against that. It's just that it makes me heartsick to think Steve might die to make that happen -- not just because I love this version of the character in and of himself, but because I can't stand the idea of Steve and Bucky being separated again.
This isn't the comics -- the likelihood of Steve coming back if he dies, as he did in the comics, seems very small, given the infrequency of movie releases compared to comic issue releases. We wouldn't know in the interim if him coming back would actually happen -- which would make it harder to enjoy Bucky's arc (whether he becomes Cap himself or not), fearing all the while that Steve won't be there at the end of it.
Now, if Steve just goes *missing*, okay, great -- we'd know there would be a reunion to look forward to. Or if Steve is retiring to give Bucky a chance to redeem himself in the eyes of the public, great! Sure, I'd miss him being on the screen full-time, but I could live with him just checking in on Bucky once in a while. Better than him being *dead*.
Aside from Bucky (and Loki), Steve is my fave MCU character -- and why on Earth-199999 would I want a favourite character to die??
Maybe he won't. Maybe I'm worried for nothing. But since filming on Avengers 4, as far as I can tell, has not started (or at least not finished), if Steve IS slated for the chopping block, then I beg the people of Marvel Studios to reconsider! Doing the Hydra Cap thing in the comics for the character's 75th birthday was heart-breaking enough -- let MCU Steve have a happy future with his best friend. After all the hell the characters have been through, they deserve it! (And frankly, so do we the fans!)
