Louise Green started this petition to Marvel

In a recent interview at the red carpet premiere for the new Marvel, female-led superhero film "Captain Marvel," Marvels head producer, Victoria Alonso, commented that "the world was ready" for the Marvel franchise to finally feature a gay superhero in the spotlight. Unfortunately, after sitting through the 2-hour absolute whirlwind thriller of a superhero movie that was "Captain Marvel," the beautifully witty and undoubtedly most powerful soon-to-be Avenger, Carol Danvers, is in fact, not that gay superhero.

I can't be surprised. In the eleven years that Marvel has dominated both the superhero and all around movie industry, there has not been a single gay character in a Marvel Movie. Not even a bisexual one. Jeri Hogarth from the now deceased Jessica Jones series is the only example of a gay character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe I can think of, and her gender was just flipped from the comics, so it kind of feels like cheating. Whereas DC, however lack-luster their cinematic universe may present, has had a hefty handful of openly LGBTQ+ superhero characters (Captain Cold, The Rey, Sara Lance, etc.) appear throughout their wide-spread TV and cinematic universe. So what on Earth (or multiple Earths) has taken Marvel this long?

The short answer? I have no idea. While Marvel has been winning the superhero game for the past decade, it's diversity game is unfortunately remarkably weak. With the exception of Black Panther, Marvel has been exploiting the likeliness of white, male, straight superheroes for far too long.

So, here's the solution.

Captain Marvel doesn't have a love interest in her stand-alone movie, and I am definitely not asking for her to get one in "Avengers: Endgame," but who would it hurt to give Carol Danvers a female love interest, or even the suggestion of one, in her (probable) sequel? Absolutely no one.

Now I'm not saying that Captain Marvel didn't already make a ginormous wave. For a 19-year-old girl, Captain Marvel inspired me beyond measure. In that theater earlier tonight, I was amazed, shocked, and quite frankly hurt that it took this long for a movie of this caliber with such a powerhouse of a woman lead to be made by Marvel. Where was this movie when I was 12?

So, I am asking that Marvel takes this already marvelous character and take it a step further: make Carol Danvers the first openly gay, or even bisexual, Marvel Cinematic Universe character. I am asking that Marvel decides to not only inspire young girls with a character as strong and as likable as Captain Marvel but to inspire young queer girls, too. Show young girls and boys around the world that superheroes come in all shapes and sizes, and much like Captain Marvel, that we are all capable of achieving anything.

The Avengers franchise is ending, but there is still a new audience worth inspiring, Marvel. I am asking Victoria Alonso directly to allow Carol Danvers to be the first LGBTQ+ Marvel superhero. The world is ready, Mrs. Alonso. We're ready for Captain Marvel to be gay.
