Ban Sale of Fur in the City of Boston

The Issue

The purpose of this petition is the urge the Boston City Council and Mayor Marty Walsh to enact a law banning the sale of fur in the city of Boston.

The fur industry is one of the cruelest industries. Millions of animals like Rabbits, Miks, Foxes, Coyotes, Raccoon Dogs, Bears, and other fur-bearing animals are killed by anal electrocution or by simply shooting at point-blank to extract the fur. Companies selling fur make billions of dollars every year by selling the fur in the form of fashion accessories and fur trims om jackets.

Whether caught in steel traps in the wild or anally electrocuted after a life in a cage on a fur factory farm, every fur coat, trinket, and even a bit of trim caused an animal tremendous suffering and took away a life. You can help save these innocent animals from suffering in the name of "fashion" by supporting fur-free designers, brands and retailers—including Gucci, Hugo Boss, Wuxly, Noize, Armani, Net-a-Porter, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Stella McCartney, Ralph Lauren and many more.

Boston being a progressive city needs to stop the support of this cruel industry by banning the sale and manufacture of fur in the city.

We would like to urge the City of Boston and Mayor Marty Walsh to introduce and pass a bill in the City Council to ban the sale and manufacture of fur products within the city of Boston. The bill needs to prohibit the sale and manufacture of products such as shoes, handbags, clothing, or trinkets that are made in whole or in part of the fur.

The fur trade is a brutal industry where millions of animals such as foxes, coyotes,  minks, rabbits, dogs, cats, raccoons, and chinchillas are killed every year. Most of these animals are raised on fur farms, where they are kept in cages, barely bigger than their bodies and confined to a life of misery. They live through intense stress and endure this life only to be killed in some of the most inhumane ways - electrocuted and stunned, some still alive as they are being skinned. They are submitted to this suffering solely for the sake of their fur.

This measure is life-changing and seeks to set an example of compassion for the rest of the state and the world to follow. Today there are countless varieties of fabric and fur alternatives. There is no need for this brutal industry, and Boston should not support this cruelty.
