HANDS OFF THEIR HOMES! Our elderly, terminally ill, disabled & battlers will be homeless

The issue

Hundreds of our most least fortunate and vulnerable members of our community will be left homeless with no where to go if Mr Daniel Andrews, Vic Premier doesnt step in and put a stop to the mass future development of the Wantirna Caravan Park - a park which the elderly call home, the terminally ill plan to die, the disabled a safe caring environment and the aussie battlers a place to simply survive and have a life worth living.

Some residents of the wantirna caravan park have lived there since it opened in 1988 and have even raised their children in this safe quiet friendly suburban park, others simply had no where else to go and now have somewhere where they belong, surrounded by neighbours they like to call "family ", somewhere where they feel safe and have eachothers backs.

These are basic human rights that we all deserve however these rights are going to be ripped away from them along with their homes, their dignity and their faith in humanity.

In August 2016, a Chinese born investor, director of a privately owned property development company who himself lives in a multi million dollar home in Canterbury, bought the caravan park for $35.6 million. It was sold to him as a "going concern" - a fully operating  business which is making profit.

The parks permanent residents own their own homes which are valued up to $140,000 however they lease the land. They have the option to either move their home at a price of approx $30,000 but to where??? Or simply loose it and watch it be demolished.

The parks closure notice came only 2 weeks after residents won a battle through consumer affairs victoria over the chinese born owner's harsh intent to raise the rent by $50- $60 pw. Consumer affairs negotiated with the owner and as of November 2016 residents rent will increase by a more affordable  $20- $30pw.

In a letter to the residents, the owner announced the closure of the park following a "detailed business analysis " and gave them all until January 2018 to get out!!! The 8.33ha site is likely to become a suburban estate as its a zoned general residential schedule 1 area.

This has left our most vulnerable sick with worry and despair, already one resident has tried taking her life in desperation because like all the other residents, face a very uncertain grim future of homelessness.

This is not what we are about in Australia, we look after our most sick and vulnerable, theres no compassion here, no humanity nothing but pure greed!!!

We call upon premier Daniel Andrews to step up, stand up and look after your own. Put a stop to the closure of the park, put a stop to any permits granted for development , put a stop to their whole life being torn from them or at the very least, order the owner to give these residents compensation, an amount thats worth their whole lifes investment (their homes), moving costs and a new site they can settle on.

Unfortunately with the increasing cost of living and the affordability of the "great aussie dream" no longer an achievable  dream for most, places like the Wantirna Caravan Park are vital in our communities, to put it quite simply - they are the roof over our heads and the life in our hearts.
