Petition to Halt Overdevelopment in Martin County

          The undersigned residents of Martin County submit this petition to implore the County Commissioners to stop the overdevelopment of Martin County – both commercial and residential.  We chose to live in Martin County because of its quiet and tranquil natural beauty.  In the last several years, we have watched with concern and dismay as the pace and scope of development has accelerated and green open spaces have disappeared. Along with development has come increased traffic and congestion, the displacement of wildlife from their habitat, and more pollution into our waterways. 

We ask that you take whatever measures are necessary to halt overdevelopment and save the unique character of Martin County, including denying developers’ requests for waivers of County building codes and zoning restrictions, withholding approval of proposed building projects, etc.  We don’t want our county to become a mirror image of the crowded and overbuilt communities to our south.  Once the land has been built upon, there’s no getting it back. It would be a terrible shame not to preserve what we have been blessed with here in Martin County.
