This petition is of immediate importance, as the Mars Area School District Board is planning to vote on the proposal made by Rex Energy at the next board meeting, March 11, 2014.
Via this petition, those who live in the school district can voice their concerns immediately to the school board to prevent the Rex Energy proposal from being accepted. Your voice is important and needs to be heard.
The placement and vertical drilling of the relevant well site is based on a lease between Rex Energy and a private land owner, Geyer. The drilling company's proposal informed the school board and public that this Geyer well site would be approximately 4,000 ft from school property. Rex energy would then utilize this Geyer well and/or possibly other well sites, to tap into the school district property horizontally underground.
The safety regarding subsurface drilling under school property is inconclusive. Although the statements from the energy company ensure there is little to no risk to the students of the district, information regarding heath and safety risks and deceptive company practices by Rex continues to be discovered as new research studies are conducted and become available. It is unclear what the immediate and long term consequences will be to the children who attend school now or those who will attend in the future. The proposed Geyer well site location presents additional issues regarding school safety both tangible and intangible.
The Mars Area School District should not profit from any direct or indirect increase risk to the students.
