Domestic violence is strongly linked to animal abuse. Victims' dogs and cats are frequently used as pawns by abusers to manipulate and control them. In an abusive environment, a companion animal may act as a lone confidant for an abused woman or kid, and an abuser takes advantage of the victim's care for his or her animal by harming the animal. Abusers may threaten or abuse animals in front of children or partners in order to prevent them from reporting abuse or fleeing. An abuser sends the message that a human victim may be next by inflicting pain on the animals.

Many animals face physical aggression, mental abuse, and life-threatening neglect on a regular basis. Their only hope is that someone decent would intervene before it's too late. Animal cruelty, like many other types of abuse, is motivated by a desire for power and control over a vulnerable victim.
