The algorithms for reviewing reports of offensive or harassing content on Facebook are in serious need of revision. As they currently stand, they are being misused by those who seek to shut down criticism of their pages or their online behavior.
These are people like Kate Tieje, a.k.a. "Modern Alternative Moma", she hawks unproven or ineffective "alternative" remedies on her page, while encouraging her followers to falsely report other posts or pages that openly challenge her claims of safety and efficacy. This same tactic has been successfully employed by Vani Hari (the so-called "Food Babe"), Dr. Joseph Mercola, Sherri Tenpenny and various other hucksters who know they can mobilize their followers to shut down pages or accounts just by overwhelming the system through sheer numbers of false reports.
Recently, the page representing the popular blog "We Love GMOs and Vaccines" was deleted because it dared to challenge the fear mongering and nonscientific beliefs that surround the food and supplement industries with scientific facts and citations. The content reported did not violate the TOS, yet because the false reports were persistent, the page was shut down. The purveyors of organic and "all natural" products and supplements, have much to lose if people start to see them for what they are, modern-day snake-oil salesmen preying on the fears and anxieties of gullible followers.
It is clear, by any reasonable estimation, the abuse alleged in most of these reports, is overstated or non-existent. On the other hand, blatant violations of the Facebook Terms of Service, including calls to dangerous or hateful action, often go ignored. Increasingly, Facebook is becoming hostile to skeptics and science advocates, which means they will likely to move to other means of getting their message out. What was meant to allow reporting of legitimately abusive content, has become a means to bully and cyber-stalk skeptics, and suppress dissenting voices. The system is clearly broken, and needs a top-to-bottom overhaul.
Mr. Zuckerberg, since you have publicly positioned yourself as an advocate for science and reason, we, the undersigned, beg you to get Facebook reporting algorithms fixed and stop this type of rampant and widespread abuse.
Thank you for your attention.
