Tell Lush Cosmetics to go vegan

Tell Lush Cosmetics to go vegan

The Issue

We appreciate that Lush Cosmetics are doing brilliant work to end animal testing and are actively supporting many animal rights charities.

However, Lush continue to use dairy, lanolin, eggs and honey in some of their products.

Lush cosmetics say they are an ethical company who care about animal rights, this is not only hypocritical but can dangerously mislead uninformed costumers into believing that dairy, lanolin, egg and honey production is cruelty free.

Lush profess that the dairy farm they buy from is 'ethical', but this farm like all UK dairy farms inseminates the cows against their will, separates the calves from their mothers after birth, keeps the calves in solitary stalls in a 'calve shed' for up to six months, before selling the male calves on for slaughter.

Lanolin comes from sheep's wool, it is produced firstly by shearing the sheep: a violent, traumatic and sometimes fatal process. In sheep farming, lambs are sent for slaughter every year, so the wool and meat industries are synonymous.

In the egg industry the label free range is also misleading. After a hens' laying cycle has finished she is killed. It is common practise that male chicks born into 'free range' egg farms are killed at birth, and their sisters often have their beaks cut off.

The Vegan Society says: ‘Claims that consuming honey helps the honey bee population thrive are not true... When farmers remove honey from a hive, they replace it with a sugar substitute, which is significantly worse for the bees’ health.’ The removal of honey is extremely traumatic for bees, and they can die after stinging the farmers.

Although Lush stock many wonderful vegan products, we want the company to follow the lead of lots of other cosmetics firms and omit all animal derived ingredients from their products.

There's never an excuse for animal abuse.
