Marital rape

Marital rape
The Issue
This petition stems from a deeply personal and widespread issue: marital rape. It is the act of engaging in sexual intercourse with one's spouse without their consent, which is the cornerstone of this problem. The severity of this issue cannot be understated, as it does not always involve physical violence, making it a hidden and heinous aspect of domestic violence and sexual abuse. Historically, marital intercourse was seen as a right of spouses, but the times have changed. Now, most societies around the world acknowledge that engaging in the act without each spouse's consent is classified as rape.
However, it is disheartening to note that there are still regions where laws do not adequately protect victims of marital rape, despite growing international recognition. According to a 2011 United Nations report, there are 127 states where marital rape is not explicitly criminalized. This is not only an infringement on human rights, it also perpetuates a culture of silence and fear. As a concerned global society, we must stand against such practices and advocate for the rights of all spouses, especially those subjected to this kind of sexual abuse.
We call on lawmakers around the world to affirm the rights of all individuals within marriages by criminalizing marital rape in all jurisdictions. By doing so, they can contribute to eradicating this form of domestic violence and sexual abuse. Consent is crucial, regardless of the relationship's nature. Stand with us to protect consent, dignity, and safety within marriage. Please sign this petition to call for global legislative change against marital rape.
