“Maybe he was engaging in intimate acts that you were very uncomfortable with and didn’t want to engage in. Maybe you were worried people would find out that you reluctantly consented…”

These are the words of Judge and Marist Professor Edward ‘Ned’ McLoughlin, while sentencing a woman who had endured years of brutal rape, abuse and exploitation at the hands of her violent partner to nineteen years to life...for killing that very abuser in defense of herself and her children.

Let’s be clear - there is no such thing as “reluctant consent” when it comes to sexual and intimate partner violence. The appropriate word here is RAPE. Shouldn't a judge and college professor know that?

“You could have safely left…” he additionally opined. The truth? Three women a day die at the hands of their abusers, and the most dangerous time for a person fleeing a violent partner is when they are trying to leave. These pernicious myths about domestic violence are dangerous and deadly, and they have no place in a civil society.

In light of recent events that have surfaced at Marist College with regard to instances of domestic violence on campus, I’m compelled to call attention to the continued presence of Ned McLoughlin as an adjunct professor there. How can the college claim to "foster a safe living and learning environment for all" when someone with such a fundamental, well-documented lack of understanding about domestic violence is allowed to shape the minds of young people?

We, the undersigned, are calling on Marist College to remove McLoughlin from their payroll and stop allowing him to serve as an authority and role model to their students. As an institution of higher learning, they must hold their faculty to a higher standard than this. We believe in the institution's ability to do the right thing - the time to do it is now.
