Security has recently sent an email regarding a 2nd potential break-in at the Lower West Cedar Townhouses. Much like the other break-in, this one occurred in the very early morning (4:15am to be exact) and the residents of the house heard someone come in through their first-floor kitchen window and enter the townhouse. Security and local police responded in 90 seconds and the intruder was gone by the time they arrived, but the incident was no less terrifying for the residents of that house.
Marist will now be providing window braces for first floor windows since every single townhouse intruder thus far has entered through windows on the first floor. Security has also asked students to secure all windows and doors and lock them before settling in for the night.
While I am glad to see Security taking more action about the break-ins, we cannot bar our windows forever. When the weather warms up next semester and people want to open their windows, what will Security do to protect students?
The administration needs to be more transparent about the other Security measures that will be taken to combat the break-ins to the sophomore townhouses. Wooden bars are not enough, we need night vision cameras, swipe-card systems to townhouses instead of traditional keys, and increased security presence in the sophomore residence areas.
