Stop the Mass Euthanasia at the Franklin County Ohio Dog Shelter.

We are a group of people who rescue and foster dogs from the Franklin County Dog Shelter. We are horrified at the mass euthanasia going on at this shelter. The shelter has had 3 identified cases of distemper between August 31 and today. Instead of opening a separate temporary facility to quarantine dogs, the shelter has since September 10th, engaged in a mass euthanasia of dogs. The dogs were not given distemper tests, and many did not show signs of illness, nor did they differentiate between kennel cough and distemper. The shelter said that many were killed because the shelter subjectively decided that the dogs "wouldn't do well" in a two-week quarantine. Over 84 dogs have been killed so far and 20 more were to be euthanized tonight. The shelter says it currently has 135 dogs in "isolation" and the shelter director said today they will euthanize 20 of these precious lives every day. He also said they would not be tested for distemper and many would be killed because Franklin County claims the dogs may have been exposed or for other reasons. Help was available to the shelter but they will not ask for it. The Humane Society of the United States would assist in setting up a second shelter and groups like Maddies Fund or PetSmart Charities would have also provided expert assistance in managing distemper without mass killing. Rescue groups would assist with supervised foster homes and keep dogs quarantined. This mass killing of these beautiful creatures who deserve to live needs to stop now. The Franklin County Commissioners have the authority to do so. Please sign the petition in memory of the dogs who have already died and to save those still alive.
