Demand that Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit Show Compassion to ALL Animals

The Issue

Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit has announced that they will be taking a monetary donation from an event that involves the slaughter of innocent chickens. While we appreciate the work that FAMD does for some animals, an organization that claims to be friends to animals should never endorse harming animals.

Chickens are beautiful animals that are smart, curious, playful, and have their own desire to live just as cats and dogs do. Chickens do not deserve the horrendous treatment they are subjected to on factory farms and above all else, they do not want to die. They deserve the compassion FAMD has shown to cats and dogs.

Chickens raised for food spend their entire lives in confinement in ammonia-filled sheds, covered in feces and urine with no access to natural light, or fresh air. Chickens are genetically modified to grow rapidly and are sent to slaughter at just 8 weeks old, where their only breath of fresh air is on a slaughter-truck, as they are transported to their death. Once these individuals reach the slaughterhouse, they are hung by their legs, as they are stabbed in the throat and violently mutilated. With 50 billion chickens being slaughtered for their flesh every single year, the chickens need FAMD to be their friend, too.

We admire the work FAMD has done for cats and dogs and want to help them align their actions with their message. All animals deserve to live free from exploitation and abuse. We are asking FAMD to refuse money raised from exploiting animals and withdraw from the fundraiser held on August 8th, 2020. In exchange, we are offering to host a fundraising event for FAMD catered by Shimmy Shack. This fundraiser will serve 100% vegan food. We are prepared to organize the community to help FAMD in ways that do not exploit or abuse animals. An animal shelter whose responsibility is to help animals should participate in animal-friendly fundraisers only.

If FAMD does not decide to show compassion to all animals we will stage a peaceful protest at the event and notify local news outlets.

Please sign this petition to let Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit know that it is unacceptable to profit off of animal abuse.

You can also contact Marie Skladd the Senior Director of Community Engagement at FAMD and encourage her to make the choice that is kind to all animals. Her email is mskladd@metrodetroitanimals.org
