The tragedy of the Surfside Florida Condo Collapse cannot be ignored. The effects of raising ocean levels and tide activity on the structural integrity of buildings has been studied. Measurements of a 10x5 km area which includes the area of the Champlain Tower collapse have shown a 1-3mm per year drop in height. 

Buildings of this sort only need to be reassessed for certification every 40yrs. 159 people are still unaccounted for and possibly trapped under the rubble of a building that was in the process of recertification. Everyone should demand that all structures in this area of Southeast Florida be taken through recertification immediately so that we might prevent the next tragedy. 

Florida finds itself on the front line of Climate Change and events like the Champlain Towers Collapse are not only likely, but inevitable. The safety of our fellow citizens living in the area depends on this. Additionally, this represents another of the many tests our nation will face as a result of our changing climate. 

Florida State Leadership must showcase their ability to preempt tragedy instead of simply react to it. It is entirely within their power to ensure this horrific situation never happens again.
