I am a 100% disabled military veteran. I became ill on active duty and suffer service-connected disabilities. Thirteen years ago, I was diagnosed with Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Peripheral neuropathy and they are really starting to take a toll on me. I am in pain everyday of my life, as well as other symptoms and side effects that come with these illnesses. I live 1.94 miles from our elementary school. My son is 5 years old and attends Hickory Creek Elementary in St John's, Florida. Florida has a "2-mile-walk-zone-policy". They also have a law that if your child is disabled, the 2-mile-walk-zone doesn't apply and a bus comes directly to the child's house. However, if you are a disabled parent, there is no law and you must simply, "find a way" to get your child to and from school. As per our county guildlines, it states that the only way around this is a wavier from the Director of Transportation, with the school's principal's endorsement. (The superintendent can also override this) My hardship wavier was denied on the bases of "Florida's 2 mile rule"

I have reached out by phone and email to every member of the school board (all five). Ive also tried to contact the Superintendent, the Director of Transportation, Commissioner and Congressmen. NO ONE will return my calls or emails (with the exception of a denial email from the Director of Transportation, first to myself and later, a second denial written to the local news). 

First Coast News of Jacksonville, Florida did a story on my family this week. Also, my story has picked up a lot of attention on social media sites with an overwhelming amount of support. It still hasn't been enough, so I decided to start this petition to help my family as well as others who need help with similar circumstances. Something needs to change! I want to get my 5-year-old consistent, reliable bus transportation that he deserves. I also want to petition a law be made for parents with disabilities to where they must allow your child school bus transportation. This is directly affecting my child and the rest of my family. I want to change this and get a law in place so that no other person, child or family member with a severe disability and/or disabilities ever have to go through what my family is going through right now. Parents with disabilities deserve reasonable accommodations to get their child/ children to and from school. Please sign this petition and be a part of the change we all want to see in this world.
