Oppose the operation of Horse Drawn Carriages on Marco Island

This industry is inherently inhumane and dangerous. Horses will be allowed to work the crowded and congested streets of Marco Island during tourist season. The slow moving carriage is an accident waiting to happen with carriages pulled by sensitive horses. At 1,000 to 2,000 pounds, the horses, who are flight (not fight) animals, which can spook at the slightest provocation and bolt into traffic, becoming unwitting weapons.

Furthermore, the temperature in Marco Island (even in winter time) can reach to 90 degrees. It doesn't matter what the heat index or temperature is, horses can collapse from exhaustion in 0 degree weather (it's been proven in New York City). Horses range from 1,000 to 2,000 lbs but given a carriage strapped to them that weighs approximately 800lbs, 5-6 people in the carriage weighing an average of 150 lbs each and then having a harness strapped to them is a lot weight for them to be carrying (approx. 1700lbs). Then being slapped on the back by a piece of leather, inhaling exhaust fumes from cars and spending hours "hoofing it" on hard asphalt. Put all those factors into perspective and add tourist traffic with potential accidents, you have a destructive sequence of events.

It is time to shut this industry down and for Marco Island to move into the 21st century with compassion for all beings. Please support this petition to oppose horse drawn carriages on Marco Island.
