Stop using lockdown browser for tests before it breaks everything

Stop using lockdown browser for tests before it breaks everything

The Issue

Lockdown browser is an application that aims to circumvent any form of cheating performed by the students. While this may be good for the University and the Students alike, it is in violation of our integrity, privacy and security and it poses a threat to student gadgets as well limiting actions that occur which may be needed during emergencies.

  • So why are we petitioning for professors to not use lockdown browsers despite all of its benefits?
Lockdown browser is known to cause issues with our current existing windows installations, deeming a prompt reinstall for all students involved. This may be caused by the fact that it modifies the registry way too much, or it most likely has Ring 0 access for it to detect countermeasures. It is not documented in any way and is a potential security hazard. Various people have experienced their gadgets being unresponsive because of it for such: https://twitter.com/britaneylmrn/status/1437425898362314758 (we are not related to this person in any way) and more.
  • Lockdown browser is a security risk and a privacy risk for the students involved, due to lockdown browser, taking control of our computers during examinations, and restricting access to certain key combinations along with the aforementioned access, we know that lockdown browser has the ability to do almost anything on our devices which mean if a students computer is infected with a virus, lockdown browser can be used as a payload to initiate malicious attacks to the computer. It is also a privacy risk because what we're doing on our computers is recorded while lockdown browser is open, now what would you explain if your "collection" of stuff gets leaked huh?
  • Lockdown browser does not support 1/4 of the student base and that's a huge number! While the majority of us use mac and windows, what about people on Linux or windows 7? such as myself? we can't be bothered to install windows or buy a new laptop because our current hardware may not support it! What about those on windows 11? we won't be able to run this due to the fact it isn't supported, are you telling us to go out of our way to reinstall and introduce another hassle for us to deal with?

I know it has its benefits but are you guys really willing to let the majority of our students suffer more just because of this browser? The fact that it's a security risk and privacy risk alone outweighs all of the benefits of the browser. Are you guys saying you're more likely to tolerate students information and secrets being leaked, and their gadgets being unable to function than using alternatives such as screen recording their screen while taking an exam while having video on? Think Mapua Think.
