Save Warrandyte Off Leash Dog Walk
The issue
This petition is asking to keep the current rules, of dogs being permitted off leash and under effective control along the Yarra River walking trail in Warrandyte.
The walking track along the Yarra River in Warrandyte is one of Victoria's best and few off leash dog trails.
The Manningham Council is upgrading Lions Park in Warrandyte and expects an increase of walkers, families and other casual users. They believe making the area between 183 Yarra Street, and the Kanagroo Ground-Warrandyte Road Bridge an on leash area will improve community safety.
Some of the community disagree with this!
The walking trail is heavily used by those within the Warrandyte or neighboring communities with dogs. A recent Facebook post on the Warrandyte Community Noticeboard about introducing leash controls created a significant conversations with the majority of people supporting keeping the area off leash.
Having off leash trails like this helps to socialise dogs and attracts many people to the area who support local business.
The existing user groups should not be constrained, to accommodate potential new users, that may, or may not, be impacted by a unspecified or unsubstantiated safety issue.
The new developments in the Lions Park upgrade will enhance the area, but this development is separated from the existing river walking track by foliage and an embankment.
Many parks within Victoria have introduced on leash restrictions in designated areas, or designated times; subsequently these areas have become either completely on leash, or banned dogs all together after the local council or Parks Victoria have decided that the variation of rules has created confusion. This could happen in the future in Warrandyte.
I've been using the trail with my pup for over eight years. We catch up with friends there, go on walks, runs, bike ride, swim in summer and have even paddled along the river together. We do not want to loose this area or have needless restrictions imposed on it's use.
