Eliminate the use of 5" and larger mesh nets within 5 miles of the south shore of Lake Winnipeg.

Eliminate the use of 5" and larger mesh nets within 5 miles of the south shore of Lake Winnipeg.
The Issue
Currently on Lake Winnipeg commercial fishers are using 5 inch and larger mesh nets. They say the main target species is Lake Whitefish. This size of net leads to a very high number of trophy size Walleyes being caught and killed. The Manitoba Freshwater Fish Marketing Board is now taking advantage of the situation and marketing Walleye eggs as a caviar alternative. Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship, the governing body, doesn't consider Lake Winnipeg to be a "recreational angled lake" and sets lake quotas and netting seasons accordingly.
This petition is asking the Manitoba government to recognize that Lake Winnipeg truly is a recreational anglers' destination, and should be managed as such. With enough signatures we will approach the government asking for a 5 mile zone from the south shore prohibiting the use 5 inch and larger mesh nets, which will help protect the migratory trophy size spawning fish.
