I have a dream…we will never be satisfied until we see those with disabilities have higher standards of care and protection and justice they need - and discrimination in the law courts against the vulnerable who are victims of neglect, exploitation and crimes against them, that go unaddressed is ended. Parents live under the oppression of apathy and discrimination in a society that values dollars and not humans. We must still rise and fight for our children in the face of the hardship and ignorance in this land.
In the words of Martin Luther King who fought to end the oppression and discrimination against race in America in the face of terrible acts of violence and hostility
“Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends.
So even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream…I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” August 28th, 1963
I too have a dream, and that dream is based on the premise that all men, women and children, regardless of race, disability or gender, were created equal and that our vulnerable disability children are also children of God that he created and they too must have the same rights human rights, rights of protection, and justice - justice that has been denied them thus far justice that has been hidden, covered up and held aloft away from those who are vulnerable and have no voice to defend themselves against the darkness…
I have a dream that one day the rivers of justice will flow and those who do evil against our defenceless will be pushed out by the flood of justice and stopped from harming the vulnerable any further – that the wolves will be accountable and made to pay for their preying on our precious ones our disability children, youth and adults those who cannot fight against the darkness that is oppressing this land – a darkness of greed and inequality and discrimination and the exploitation of the weak…
I have a dream that one day parents of children with disabilities will no longer weep helplessly for their children as they see them harmed and exploited and even die, that one day parents will not sit in despair and fear for their children’s futures. That others would come forward to support us who suffer so much for our children. That parents would rise up and stand together as a force that will push out the evil and darkness and that we would stand side by side walking for our children as we are their fighters.
I have a dream that our precious lambs will be protected and supported and helped to live and thrive not to be pushed down by those who would seek to make filthy manna out of them or pushed aside by a society which does not care.
I have a dream that all vulnerable children everywhere would be accepted for who they are, protected and feel safe and would not be left alone in the darkness… not exploited, not harmed, not ignored when they cry out, not excluded by discrimination and prejudice - this is my dream this is my hope for the future is to have hope and justice for our children for they too deserve that safety from dangers of this world, and they too will have happiness and freedom from fear – because they will be valued and truly cared for properly, by those who are of high calibre and character, and loved unconditionally even by their own families.
Until then we, the parents and families who do care for our oh so vulnerable children we will never ever be satisfied…
IN the words of Martin Luther King “No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.” August 28th, 1963
