Mandating Safety and Security for Kennesaw State University Students
The Issue
Kennesaw State University has always been known as a great institution for many students since 1963.
Kennesaw has provided many degrees, scholarships, transportation, extracurricular activities, programs, and certificates. However, it has lacked one of the sole qualities that every educational institution should possess, which is security and protection for ALL students.
Over the past year, this institution has tragically suffered multiple incidents that have caused harm to our students. We have endured unacceptable breaches of campus security, including armed intruders roaming freely, and sowing fear and disruption among our student body and community. Compounding these grave concerns, there has been an escalating pattern of unreported incidents involving students, precipitating heightened anxiety and apprehension. However, the homicide of Ms. Franklin has represented an unconscionable nadir, profoundly shaking the foundations of our campus environment. This severe transgression demands an immediate, comprehensive, and multi-faceted institutional response to address glaring safety vulnerabilities head-on and urgently restore a robust sense of security for all members of our university community. Safeguarding the inviolable right to pursue education in a safe haven must be our preeminent priority moving forward.
The most recent incident occurred on May 18, 2024, at approximately 4:43 PM EST. Our friend and fellow student of Kennesaw State University, Alasia Franklin, was killed by her proposed boyfriend due to domestic violence.
Where was our campus police? And why is so easy to access our homes?
From mold poisoning within our dorms to random suicides within our off-campus housing. We have realized that our campus has threatened the psychological state of our students. As a result of the recent event, Kennesaw State University students have decided to petition for more campus safety and security, financial compensation (housing/ student loans), and overall accountability for these recent events.
Kennesaw State University, do not sweep our request under the rug. You have gotten away with it before, but your students need compensation.
For anyone reading this, sign this petition! Help us make a change on our campus and for the students to come.
Sincerely,
Kennesaw State University NAACP
