Mandate Wheelchair Accessibility in All Public Places

Mandate Wheelchair Accessibility in All Public Places

The Issue

The world should be for all. Yet, my sister, equipped with her wheelchair, often had difficulties reaching her classroom. This struggle did not happen in seclusion; many others are affected by this daily. It is a matter of equality and a test of our empathy as a society. Today, an estimate of 2.2 million people in the U.S. depends on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks (Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Disability Statistics and Demographics, 2018). Yet, not all public places are wheelchair-accessible, making mobility an obstacle rather than a right. Accessible design is more than an architectural issue; it is a human rights issue. We need to ensure that everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, has equal access to public facilities. Let us urge lawmakers and business owners to adhere to the principles of universal design. Infrastructure should not exclude but include all. Let us stand together and petition for a law mandating wheelchair accessibility in all public places. Sign this petition and help us raise awareness for this often overlooked issue.
