As an avid trail blazer in Islamabad, I find this deterioration deeply personal and distressing. Our hills, a symbol of Islamabad’s natural charm, are turning into dumpsites, and immediate action is needed.

The Margalla Hills National Park is a treasure for residents and tourists alike, offering over fifteen trails that attract thousands of hikers every year.

 Unfortunately, the popularity of these trails has made them vulnerable to irresponsible waste disposal, threatening the area's ecological balance and wildlife, such as the rare leopards and over 600 species of plants. The trash not only disrupts the fauna and flora but also poses significant risks of fires and soil degradation.

With thousands visiting the Margalla Hills annually, we can turn this tide if each of us contributes to cleaning our shared spaces. I propose a simple, yet impactful solution: require every hiker to collect and carry back at least half a kilogram of waste during their visit.

This collaborative effort would significantly reduce the litter on trails, protect wildlife, and preserve the hills’ beauty. Implementing this initiative is not just a step towards cleanliness; it extends one's commitment towards maintaining the park's pristine condition.

Countries around the world have successfully implemented similar initiatives for their protected parks—and we've seen inspiring results. For instance, many national parks in the United States promote "Leave No Trace" principles, encouraging visitors to leave each area better than they found it.

If implemented in Islamabad, this practice would empower every visitor to become a guardian of nature, fostering a greater sense of ownership and responsibility.

I urge the Capital Development Authority along with environmental organizations in Pakistan to take immediate action and introduce this mandatory waste collection rule for all hikers in the Margalla Hills. This policy should be complemented with educational campaigns highlighting the severity of littering and the importance of preservation efforts.
