The Issue

As a dog owner, I have experienced first-hand the difficulties of travelling with a large dog. I cannot travel with him as Via Rail does not allow large dogs outside of their crates and only allows dogs up to 22lb in their cabins [source: Travelling with pets]. My dog, though large, is well-behaved and accustomed to transit. My wish is for Via Rail to allow ticket sales for large dogs during off-peak times and restricted to one coach.

It is not unheard of for transportation companies to accommodate large dogs. In Europe, for instance, many rail companies allow leashed dogs of all sizes to ride in the passenger cabin [source: Dogs on Trains: Europe, Rail Europe]. In addition, the Go Train also allows dogs leashed (max 2 per person) during off-peak hours [source: Dogs Travelling on GO: Pet Policy  Details]. Such policies have proven not to cause major disturbances or safety issues. There is no credible reason why the same cannot be applied on Via Rail, especially during off-peak times, when trains are less crowded.

Allowing large dogs to accompany their owners on the train would not only be a benefit for pet owners like myself but would also promote enhanced patronage of the rail network. Let's also not forget that this change would foster inclusivity and make travel less stressful for pets and their owners alike.

Therefore, we urge Via Rail to reconsider its pet policy to accommodate larger dogs during off-peak times in a designated coach. Please sign this petition to support this cause.
