I've always had a close bond with animals and I've been appalled by the state of cleanliness in zoos. This is a personal matter to me, and possibly a life-and-death matter for the animals housed within these facilities. Zoos across our nation vary in their sanitary procedures and standards, often falling short of providing an environment conducive for animal health. It is distressing to see the animals we love kept in less than optimal conditions.

According to a study at the University of Exeter, poor hygiene can lead to increased disease transmission among animals - often leading to preventable deaths (Hill & Broom, 2009). We can and should do better. By enforcing a regulation mandating twice-daily cleaning in all zoos, we can significantly increase the standard of living for these animals, better preserving their health and our natural heritage.
