Mandate the Installation of Platform Screen Doors at BART Stations
The Issue
I ride BART almost daily, and the safety on the platforms has always been a personal and urgent concern for me. Recently, the unthinkable happened when a 74-year-old woman was pushed into an oncoming train at BART's Powell Street Station, resulting in her tragic demise. This is not a risk that anyone should face while using public transportation. With the installation of platform screen doors, incidents like this can be mitigated or eliminated entirely.
Platform screen doors have proven to be effective in promoting public safety in various train stations around the world. Not only do they prevent unnecessary injuries and deaths, but they also support operational efficiency by deterring unauthorized access to the tracks.
Incorporating full-height doors would be optimal, but less expensive alternatives, such as Japanese rope-style screen doors, would still be a significant step towards enhancing public safety.
In San Francisco, we value the lives and safety of all our fellow citizens. Let's urge BART to install platform screen doors across all stations in San Francisco. Our health, safety, and peace of mind when riding trains will depend on this crucial improvement. Please sign this petition so that tragedies like this will never happen again.
