Mandate the Change of Offensive Display Pictures on Social Media
The Issue
My family and I recently moved to a new country, where we were excited to make new friends and immerse ourselves in a different culture. However, our excitement was dampened when we started encountering racial jokes from some individuals, often accompanied by offensive display pictures on their social media profiles.
These images not only perpetuate harmful stereotypes but also create an unwelcoming environment for people like us who are trying to adapt to a new place. It's disheartening that these images are allowed to persist without any repercussions.
According to the Pew Research Center, 58% of adults have experienced online harassment at least once in their lives (Pew Research Center, 2017). This is not just about my family; it's about millions of people worldwide who face similar situations every day.
We believe that social media platforms should take responsibility for creating safe spaces for all users. Therefore, we urge them to implement policies requiring users with offensive display pictures to change them immediately. By doing so, they can help reduce the instances of online harassment and make their platforms more inclusive.
Please sign this petition if you stand against online harassment and believe in creating safer digital communities for everyone.
