My son suffered second-degree burns on the majority of his back after a hot drink was accidentally spilled on him during a children's party at an Edinburgh venue. The drink was freshly boiled and served in a standard cup without a lid. This heartbreaking incident has compelled me to advocate for change to prevent similar accidents from happening to other families. 

In Edinburgh alone, there are numerous venues catering to children's play areas and parties. Parents frequently visit these venues with their little ones, expecting a safe and fun environment. However, the lack of precautionary measures regarding the serving of hot beverages poses a significant risk to children.

Statistics from healthcare services show that burns and scalds account for a large proportion of injuries in children. These injuries are entirely preventable with the right safety measures in place.

By mandating that all venues with children's play areas or parties provide hot drinks in takeaway cups with lids, we can dramatically reduce the risk of such serious injuries. This policy would enhance safety while maintaining the comfort and relaxation parents seek when visiting these places. 

I urge the local council and business owners to take immediate action to implement this simple yet effective safety measure. Prioritising the well-being of our children is imperative, and this small change can lead to a substantial reduction in accidents at children's venues.
