I am writing this petition with a heavy heart and a hope for change. A dear friend of mine recently experienced an unthinkable tragedy when their beloved dog was shot between the eyes simply for wandering onto someone else's property. This incident is not isolated, but part of a larger issue that needs immediate attention.

In South Carolina, animal cruelty laws are currently classified as misdemeanors, which often result in minimal penalties. This lack of stringent punishment does not deter individuals from causing harm to innocent animals. According to the Humane Society, nearly 1 million animals are abused or killed each year due to acts of cruelty across the United States.

We believe that it is time for South Carolina to set an example by strengthening its animal protection laws. We urge our lawmakers to reclassify animal cruelty as a felony offense with stricter penalties including significant fines and imprisonment.

By doing so, we can ensure that everyone is held accountable for their actions towards animals and prevent such heartbreaking incidents from happening again in our community.
