The personal connection I have with this issue arises from my strong conviction that Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should always be stationed outside of patients’ rooms, and must be discarded within the room itself, after every use. This mandate of effective PPE utilisation is critical, especially pertinent when considering shared spaces within nursing homes, rehabilitation centres and other such healthcare facilities. 

PPE acts as a barrier between infectious materials like viral and bacterial contaminants, and mucous membranes such as the skin, mouth, nose, and eyes. When used correctly, PPE has been found to significantly reduce the transmission of contaminants from blood, body fluids, or respiratory secretions (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). This protection is particularly crucial for patients who are at high risk for contracting infections, such as those undergoing surgical procedures.

In spite of its importance, there is a current lack in formal, comprehensive training with regards to handling PPE. Workers are often unsure about the correct ways to use, remove, and discard this crucial tool. Instituting immediate and thorough training regimes regarding PPE use is the need of the hour, and will significantly improve patient safety in healthcare settings.

I stand strong in my plea for stricter guidelines around PPE usage, and invite you to join me in this pressing mission.
