Mandate Sindhi Language Signboards for all Shops and Establishment in Ulhasnagar
The Issue
I am a proud Sindhi, born and raised in Ulhasnagar, Maharashtra. Post-independence, we Sindhis were not allocated a separate state or union territory in India. Instead, we were given a town that was once an army officers' camp. We rehabilitated this place and built the infrastructure that stands today. We have been contributing to society and our country ever since.
Our language, Sindhi, is more than just a means of communication; it's an integral part of our identity and culture. However, it's disheartening to see the diminishing use of our mother tongue in our own town due to lack of official recognition.
Therefore, I urge the local government to mandate all shops in Ulhasnagar to display signboards in Sindhi language along with other languages if any. This will not only help preserve our rich culture and literature but also promote linguistic diversity.
According to UNESCO's Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger (2009), there are 197 endangered languages in India alone with many on verge of extinction due to lack of usage at public places including commercial establishments.
By implementing this policy change at local level we can set an example for other regions where minority languages are struggling for survival thereby contributing towards preservation of linguistic diversity which is vital for cultural richness and social harmony.
Sindhi is one of the Official language of India out of 22 Official Languages of India. It is high time state government should also start looking into importance of restoring and preserving Sindhi Language.
As per the Latest Amendments, in order to preserve Marathi Language in Maharashtra, Govt. of Maharashtra has mandated that Signboards of Shops and establishments must be in Marathi (where area covered by Marathi scripts should be at least 50%). It's a humble request to the Governments that for Ulhasnagar mandate it to Sindhi.
Let us stand together as proud residents of Ulhasnagar and demand respect for our mother tongue by signing this petition today!
