Mandate Serious Treatment of Animal Cruelty and Neglect Cases by Law Enforcement and Prosecutors
The Issue
I write this petition as a dedicated member of a small, non-profit dog rescue organization in Logan County, Arkansas. Daily, we witness the detrimental effects of animal cruelty and neglect all too often. Despite our best efforts to intervene, our pleas for justice frequently fall on deaf ears. Law enforcement and prosecutors must be compelled to treat these horrific cases with the gravity they deserve.
In 2019 alone, over 1,000 incidents of animal cruelty were reported across Arkansas. Yet, only a fraction of these cases ever make it into a courtroom (source: Arkansas Crime Statistics). This alarming lack of enforcement and prosecution not only leaves innocent animals in grave jeopardy but also emboldens potential offenders, leading to a vicious cycle of abuse that continues unchecked.
Moreover, studies indicate that there is a strong correlation between animal abuse and domestic violence. People who abuse animals are five times more likely to harm humans. Yet, in the majority of states, animal cruelty crimes are only considered misdemeanors (source: American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). It’s irrefutable that our legal system isn’t adequately addressing this issue.
We call on the law enforcement agencies and public prosecutors in Logan County, and indeed throughout Arkansas, to scale up their efforts and take animal cruelty and neglect cases with the utmost seriousness. An improved system for addressing these crimes will not only protect countless animals, but it will also enhance public safety as a whole. Make our voice heard – sign this petition urging our authorities to treat these heinous acts as more than a slap on the wrist. Together, we can ensure justice for the most vulnerable among us.
