We’re nearing 200 signatures in under 24 hours—and your voices are being heard. Thank you to everyone who has joined this growing movement to restore childhood and strengthen social, emotional, and academic growth by expanding recess in our schools.
Currently, New York State has no law that mandates recess during the school day. While a bill has been introduced calling for 30 minutes of recess, our advocacy calls for more comprehensive change:
60 minutes of recess spread throughout the school day
Recess may not be withheld as punishment
Recess counted within the required 900 instructional hours
This would not require extending the school day. Instead, it calls for a shift toward interdisciplinary teaching, which aligns with how children learn best. It would also not replace physical education, art, or music—rather, it would enhance and complement them.
As a state—and as a nation—we are falling short of meeting our children’s needs. It’s time for a paradigm shift that truly supports student outcomes. Believe it or not, recess is part of the solution.
