Mandate safer crashguards on trucks to prevent highway fatalities : INDIA
The Issue
Highway safety is a concern that is personal to me and countless others.Every life is valuable and shouldnt be wasted in government bureaucracy and loose enforcement
THE ASK :
A. Mandate rigid crash barriers for all trucks that can absorb a 1.5 ton car impact at 70kmph
B. Mandate visibility of truck by enforcing working bright LED tail lights and indicators
C. Mandate online trainings for HGV license, so that they are made aware of the different safety threats they produce in the road
D. Rigid enforcement of these laws, leading to instant suspension of license and/or RC of the vehicle in question if violated
E. Mandate video trainings for all license holders about road safety and speeding risks
Recently, a tragic accident claimed the life of a VW Virtus owner, who was crushed under a truck that lacked adequate crashguards. The truck, an auto carrier, had a tail that extended dangerously long beyond the rear wheels — a design flaw that cost a life.
This is not an isolated incident; hundreds of lives are at risk every day on the highways due to inadequate safety measures on commercial vehicles.
The implementation of standardized rear and side crashguards on trucks could have prevented this tragedy. A strong crashguard can withstand impacts of up to 70kmph, potentially saving numerous lives.
There is already a precedent for such standards; for instance, the American crash guard standard, which you can observe:

this shows the efficacy of robust crashguards. It’s time we adopt similar safety measures.
Moreover, improvements in rear tail lights and visibility are crucial. Poor lighting and visibility contribute significantly to accidents, especially at night or in low-light conditions. By enforcing strict standards for the brightness and positioning of tail lights, we can enhance safety for all road users.
To ensure compliance, rigorous fines should be levied on those who fail to adhere to these safety standards. This will not only serve as a deterrent but also encourage truck operators to maintain their vehicles to the required standards.
The onus is on us, and more importantly, on the relevant authorities, to prioritize public safety over bureaucracy. Every life is valuable, and no one should lose their life due to negligence and lax regulations. Let us not wait for another tragedy to occur before we take action.
Sign the petition to compel the authorities to mandate strong crashguards on trucks, improve visibility through adequate lighting, and enforce strict penalties for non-compliance. Together, we can make our highways safer for everyone.
