Mandate Reporting of Accidental Cat Hits to the Police

The Issue

Last night, a heartbreaking incident occurred. While walking my dog, I came across my neighbour’s beautiful cat lying lifeless in the road. He had been hit by a car and left unattended. This sweet, affectionate creature full of life was only nine months old. This is not an isolated incident; I have personally lost cats to road traffic accidents where no one stopped or reported.

The pain and grief that follow such incidents are immense for those who loved these animals. It's time we recognize this issue and take action to prevent further unnecessary loss of feline lives.

In the UK alone, it is estimated that over 230,000 cats are killed on roads each year (Source: Cats Protection). With the recent law requiring all cats to be microchipped, it has become easier than ever before for owners to be notified if their pet becomes a casualty on our roads.

Currently, if a driver hits a dog they are legally required to stop and report it to the police - this should extend equally to cats too. We need legislation that mandates reporting any accidental cat hits immediately so that owners can at least have closure and possibly save their pet if medical attention is swift enough.

We urge lawmakers everywhere - please make it mandatory for drivers who accidentally hit cats with their vehicles to report these incidents immediately. Let's bring about change in memory of all those beloved pets who were tragically taken from us too soon due simply because someone failed to stop or report an accident.

Please sign this petition today – let’s ensure no more families have to suffer such heartbreak without recourse or resolution.
