I am a recipient of Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) benefits. Despite this assistance, my monthly income is stretched thin due to the high cost of rent and other living expenses. My financial situation is so dire that affording groceries has become a struggle. This not only affects me but also my pets who rely on me for their sustenance.

Rent takes up an exorbitant portion of my income, leaving little room for other necessities like food and utilities. Even with two people on AISH sharing accommodation costs, $1080 per month is still too much to bear given the rising cost of living.

The issue extends beyond just rent prices; it's also about housing conditions and tenant rights. In cold weather conditions, I receive inadequate heating in all areas except my bedroom because it's located above the furnace. Furthermore, necessary repairs around our home are being neglected.

This personal experience isn't unique to me alone; many low-income individuals face similar struggles daily. That's why we need your support in petitioning for legislative changes that will:

1) Cap rent at 30% of a low-income individual’s earnings without any application process as long as there’s proof of income.
2) Prohibit any form of discrimination against tenants.
3) Allow tenants their lawful right to have visitors or overnight guests.
4) Mandate move-in/out inspections otherwise any damage deposit should be returned in full.
5) Ensure rentals always meet housing code standards.
