Mandate registry for domestic abusers

The Issue

I know all too well the devastating impact of domestic abuse. As a survivor, I faced the harrowing reality that my abuser, despite receiving a suspended sentence, walks free, untracked and free to harm again. This glaring gap in our judicial system leaves abusers unaccountable and endangers countless innocent lives.

Domestic abuse is a scourge on society. According to the World Health Organization, about 1 in 3 women worldwide have been subjected to either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence. Each statistic represents a victim, a family, and a community torn apart by this violence. Yet, many perpetrators escape strict oversight due to light sentencing or legal oversights. If domestic abusers were required to sign a public registry, similar to sex offenders, it would serve as a significant deterrent and provide society with necessary knowledge to protect themselves.

Registries for sex offenders have long been effective in helping law enforcement prevent further offenses. They empower communities with information, ensuring that those who have displayed dangerous, repetitive behaviors can be monitored more effectively. A similar registry for domestic abusers would alert potential victims and community members, helping to prevent further violence.

Urging our policymakers to enact this change is crucial. We need legislation that not only punishes abusers but also prevents future offenses. Implementing a domestic abuser registry would be a monumental step towards protecting vulnerable individuals and reducing the incidence of domestic violence.

Join this urgent call to action. Sign this petition to demand that our legal system enforce a registry for domestic abusers, to protect victims and uphold justice.
