Mandate Reduced Caseloads and Safer Placements by Tennessee DCS

Mandate Reduced Caseloads and Safer Placements by Tennessee DCS
The Issue
Growing up in the foster care system, I experienced firsthand the adverse effects that overwhelmed Department of Children's Services (DCS) workers and inadequate placement strategies can have on vulnerable children. Not only did I suffer horrific abuse prior to my time in DCS, but the trauma continued as DCS placed me in environments that were not safe or suitable. The abuse I endured during my time in foster care has left lasting scars on my adulthood, and I am compelled to advocate for changes that can prevent others from experiencing the same hardship.
In Tennessee, the Department of Children's Services (DCS) is tasked with the formidable responsibility of protecting our state's most vulnerable children. However, many caseworkers are burdened with overwhelming caseloads, making it difficult for them to effectively manage and ensure the safety of each child. When workers are stretched too thin, vulnerable children are at risk of being placed in harmful situations that further compound their trauma.
It is imperative that we demand change. DCS must lighten the caseloads of its workers to allow them to focus adequately on each child's needs. In addition, DCS should be prohibited from placing violent children in homes with other vulnerable children, and should ensure that foster caregivers are fully equipped to handle any potential violent behaviors. Transparency in the process is also crucial; it is vital for DCS to disclose a child's history of violence to foster caregivers in order to ensure proper care and safety for all.
Children in foster care deserve to feel secure and protected, free from the threat of violence and the neglect that can accompany an overloaded system. By reducing caseloads, implementing stricter placement protocols, and ensuring complete transparency, we can create a safer and more nurturing environment for the children of Tennessee.
Please join me in calling on the Tennessee Department of Children's Services to make these critical changes. Sign this petition to support a dignified and secure foster care system for every child in Tennessee.
