Young children and all Canadians remain highly vulnerable to the risks of measles, mumps, and rubella. According to the World Health Organization, measles alone resulted in 140,000 deaths globally in 2018, most of those being children under 5 years old (WHO, 2019). We can't ignore such devastating statistics. 

In recent years these highly contagious diseases are making an alarming comeback in North America. In large part this is due to declining vaccination rates across parts of the USA.  With an unrestricted flow of US citizens across the border, these visitors will inevitably spread their diseases to Canada.

This becomes an urgent concern, with the recent withdrawal of the USA from the World Health Organization, and with recent degradation and chaos within their public health systems. It is unlikely we will receive reliable information or warning from the USA, especially regarding any vaccine-preventable disease.

Mandatory MMR vaccination for all visitors would act as an important line of defense against these diseases entering Canada, and potentially causing outbreaks amongst those who are most vulnerable. This includes infants too young for vaccination, the elderly, and patients with certain medical conditions who cannot receive vaccines.
