Mandate Privacy Stalls in School Locker Rooms to Protect Student Dignity

The Issue

My deeply personal experience stems from watching my son, and many of his friends, constantly suffer in a situation that should be completely avoidable. Uncomfortable, and at times afraid, these kids are forced to undress in front of their peers in school locker rooms - an experience that has provided a platform for harassment and bullying. The situation is even more acute for my son, a proud transgender boy. On top of this, they were reprimanded for trying to find a private solution by using the bathroom stalls to change.

There is an urgent need for privacy stalls in all school locker rooms. A lack of privacy can lead to anxiety, embarrassment, and indeed facilitate an environment where bullying can thrive, undermining a child's right to dignity and safety. According to a study by the Journal of Youth Adolescence, approximately half of the students aged 12-17 reported being bullied in locker rooms due to a lack of privacy. Introducing privacy stalls will provide young people with a safe space to change, thereby reducing the potential exposure to harassment and bullying.

Moreover, it's critical that we recognize and respect the diverse needs of our students, including those who identify as transgender. No child should feel discomfort or fear in an environment that is meant to support their development and well-being.

Privacy, safety, dignity - these are not privileges, but rights that should be upheld. To ensure every child's right to safety and dignity, we call upon schools to implement privacy stalls in all locker rooms. This simple step will help create a safer, more inclusive environment for all students. Your signature can drive this crucial change - sign the petition.
