Mandate Pension Plans for Retired Police and Service Dogs

The Issue

Having worked with dogs I have experienced the love and loyalty they give to the human they rely on every day. Police and service dogs play a vital role in our community and their dedication to duty is nothing short of heroic. From sniffing out illicit substances and explosives to pursuing dangerous criminals, their ability to perform high-stakes tasks is unparalleled. Their job is not for the faint at heart. It demands utmost courage, promptness, and unwavering loyalty - all of which these dogs offer without reluctance.

Like many of us, these dogs often retire due to health challenges caused by the hazardous environments they've been exposed to, all in the line of duty. The sad reality is many insurance companies do not cover ex-working dogs, which leaves them vulnerable in their golden years.

Evidence shows across the U.K, more than 1,500 police dogs are currently in service (Source: UK Police Dog Welfare Association). Every single one of these dogs, upon retirement, stands to face the harsh reality of inadequate health coverage.

In a society where we value fairness and doing the right thing, it is our collective responsibility to ensure these heroes are taken care of after they've dutifully served us. We absolutely must afford retired police and service dogs the pension they justifiably deserve, providing them with adequate healthcare support for managing these challenges.

Please, let's step forward to help them. Pension for retired police and service dogs isn't merely a demand, it's an absolute necessity. The courage that each of these dogs has shown deserves no less than our complete support. Please sign this petition to mandate a pension policy for our retired police and service dogs, so they can enjoy the dignity and comfort they so deserve in their retirement.
