The Issue

My personal story is one of love and commitment, yet it is also a story of struggle. For the past five years, I have been a full time caregiver for my husband. An injury left him a quadriplegic, dependent on a ventilator, and I have been by his side every step of the way, unwavering in my dedication. However, our situation is not unique, and many other spouses find themselves in similar circumstances.

It is a harsh reality that in the United States, spouses often do not have the right to be paid caregivers for their permanently disabled partners, a practice that deprives countless families of a critical source of income and forces them into financial hardship. It's estimated that 43.5 million caregivers have provided unpaid care to an adult or child in the last 12 months [source: National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP]. This is not just unjust - it's a serious public issue that needs immediate attention.

We are asking that a mandate be put in place to secure the right of all spouses to be recognized and compensated as full-time caregivers to their permanently disabled partner. Financial support for spousal caregivers is not simply an economic necessity, but also a matter of humanity and dignity, granting recognition to the tireless devotion of spouses to their loved ones in need.

Please, sign this petition and help us in our quest to secure the rights and livelihoods of caregivers across the country, who are so essentially needed, yet so often overlooked. Together, we can make a lasting, positive change in their lives.
