Mandate North Devon District Council to Allow Pets in Temporary Emergency Housing

Mandate North Devon District Council to Allow Pets in Temporary Emergency Housing
The Issue
My family and I lost our home in January due to a No Fault Eviction. We faced the heartbreaking ordeal of parting with our beloved family pets - our six ex-battery hens, a rabbit, and two Chinese Crested dogs managed to find new homes. We were fortunate to have a friend offer to look after our big Labrador cross, the remaining member of our pet family. However, our family is incomplete without her comforting presence, especially after the pain of losing our other pets. This experience has been wrenching and has made us painfully aware of the lack of provision for pets in temporary emergency accommodation. We are not alone. Many North Devon residents faced, and continue to face similar circumstances. According to RSPCA, in 2018 alone, 560 pet owners in Devon became homeless and struggled with pet-friendly accommodation. This petition requests the North Devon District Council to allow eligible residents who need temporary emergency accommodation to keep their pets. The careful introduction of certain conditions, such as maintaining pet cleanliness and behavior, could make this a feasible possibility. Our pets are more than animals; they are our family, our companions in both joyous and challenging times. They bring us comfort and a sense of normalcy when all else is falling apart. The North Devon District Council has a human and ethical responsibility to accommodate this. Sign this petition to urge the Council to recognize the significance of our relationship with our pets and enact policy that allows pets in temporary emergency accommodation.
