Mandate No Electric Bikes On Sidewalks In Business Districts

The Issue

As a deeply concerned resident of our bustling neighborhood, I've become increasingly alarmed by the escalating number of electric bikes zooming down our sidewalks. With significant foot traffic, especially in the area spanning five blocks around our local businesses, these fast-moving vehicles present a real hazard to pedestrians.

Our sidewalks, which are meant to be a safe space for residents to stroll, have been overtaken by speeding electric bikes whose riders often come from delivery services associated with nearby businesses. These bikes, capable of reaching speeds up to 20 miles per hour, endanger pedestrians, children, and pets who have no protection against them (source: Consumer Reports).

The lack of laws and regulations governing these bikes has resulted in a free-for-all that compromises the safety of all who use the sidewalk. We're not asking for a ban on electric bikes. Far from it. We recognize the vital role they play in delivery services and the contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. But we urge for a clear separation and distinction between pedestrian walkspaces and travel routes for these bicycles.

We're calling on local authorities to require businesses within a five block radius to direct their delivery individuals not to drive electric bikes on the sidewalk. Let's make our sidewalks safe againfor all members of our community, young and old alike. Your signature can help make a difference. Sign this petition today.
