Mandate Neurodivergent Patient Care in Nursing Curriculum

Mandate Neurodivergent Patient Care in Nursing Curriculum
The issue
As a nurse deeply committed to my profession, I find myself constantly learning and adapting to serve my patients better. However, being a mother and wife to neurodivergent children and a husband who has Autism, ADHD, as well as being diagnosed with ADHD myself, I am daily reminded of the significant gaps in nursing education concerning neurodivergent care. It baffles me that a topic so crucial is neither mentioned nor taught in any nursing subjects.
Neurodivergent individuals process the world differently. This variance in neurological processing necessitates tailored nursing approaches that are calm, therapeutic, and accommodating. Unfortunately, the current nursing curriculum lacks focused education on how to address these specific requirements. This absence of knowledge has long-term repercussions; it makes comprehensive assessments and treatments challenging, often resulting in traumatic experiences and disengagement from healthcare services.
Approximately 15-20% of the population is neurodivergent, according to data from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). , this is a significant portion of society that requires thoughtful healthcare solutions. Yet, without proper training, nursing professionals are ill-equipped to provide the essential care these patients need, with 77% of clinicians stating their knowledge is "poor to fair". This education gap not only affects health outcomes but also reinforces a cycle of poor healthcare experiences and mistrust.
By mandating "Nursing the Neurodivergent Patient" as a required topic in all nursing courses, we can begin to bridge this gap. This education would provide nurses with the skills to accommodate and create a supportive environment for neurodivergent patients. It is a proactive step towards equitable healthcare, ensuring that all patients receive the informed and compassionate care they deserve.
I urge educational institutions, healthcare organisations, and accreditation bodies to recognise the importance of this issue and act swiftly. Implementing this change will significantly improve the quality of life for neurodivergent individuals and ensure that nurses are equipped with the knowledge necessary for inclusive patient care.
Sign this petition to support the integration of neurodivergent care education into nursing curriculums, transforming the future of healthcare for millions.
