The Issue

My 19-year-old daughter, Ariel, passed away in 2019 due to a fentanyl overdose. A year later, I was the Safety Manager giving CPR to an employee who overdosed at work. The ambulance took 25 minutes to arrive and administer Narcan, precious time where a life hung in the balance. This personal experience reveals the imperative need for Narcan availability in workplaces.

Naloxone, also known as Narcan, is a lifesaving medication that can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose. The need for Narcan is current and pressing; according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 70,000 people died of a drug overdose in 2017 in the United States, the majority due to opioids. Just like having first aid supplies and fire extinguishers is standard protocol for businesses, Narcan should be as well.

All employers are responsible for the wellbeing of their employees. Current policies mandate First Aid and CPR training for designated first responders in the workplace. There's no reason why Narcan training should be an exception.

Life cannot afford to wait for emergency services to arrive. An overdose can happen anywhere, including workplaces. And in these situations, minutes matter.

As someone who's been affected firsthand by the devastation of an overdose, I urge you to join me in my effort to mandate Narcan availability and training in all businesses. We need to ensure that employers are equipped to respond in a timely and effective manner to opioid overdoses, potentially saving countless lives. Please, sign this petition and let's make this change together.
