I love my animals and the thought of being separated from them is heartbreaking. Many pet owners across the UK and Ireland share this sentiment, and for good reason. Pets are family, and losing them is a highly distressing, emotionally charged experience. Sadly, the number of stolen or missing pets has been on the rise. According to data from Pet Theft Awareness, a pet goes missing every five minutes in the UK. Now, more than ever, it is crucial to have systems in place to ensure lost animals can be reunited with their loving families.

One of the most efficient ways to facilitate this process is through the use of microchip technology. Although pet microchipping is mandatory for dogs and now cats, many pets remain separated from their families because not every veterinary practice routinely checks for microchips when animals are admitted.

In 2018, The Kennel Club reported that 23% of dogs that were found were not reunited with their owners simply because their microchips were never scanned.

The solution is clear and straightforward: mandate that all veterinary practices throughout the UK and Ireland perform a microchip scan on every animal admitted to their care. This would dramatically increase the likelihood of stolen or missing pets being reunited with their families. It’s a small procedural requirement, but one with profound implications for countless families.

By making microchip scanning compulsory, we ensure that our beloved pets have the best possible chance of returning home.
